AI is coming for your job. PANIC! I know it matters, but I don't know what to do with that statement anymore. A recent Business Insider piece points to growing concern that automation is hitting entry-level roles harder than other job categories. Companies like Amazon, JPMorgan, and Microsoft have already reduced headcount in certain areas, and new grads are finding it tougher to break in—especially in sectors that used to take a ton of new grads like tech, law, and finance.
The Reality
Yes—AI is displacing some jobs. Many entry-level roles exist to support senior staff: writing queries, compiling reports, taking notes, managing task lists. These are all things AI can theoretically handle now. In a cost-conscious environment, that can make those positions vulnerable.
The Hype
At the same time, there’s a tendency to overstate what’s happening. Much of the recent layoff activity has been concentrated in a dozen big tech companies that over-hired during an era of near-zero interest rates. Their cuts say as much about past excess as they do about AI’s future. The truth? No one knows exactly where AI is headed. For every argument that it will wipe out jobs, there’s an equally strong case that it will make people more productive and valuable.
Where That Leaves You
If you’re part of Gen Z entering the job market, you’re stepping into uncertainty. That really is not a reason to panic—it’s a reason to adapt. How you respond to this uncertainty will shape your career.
Three Actions You Can Take Now
Be Agile
Your dream might have been working for Google. But the companies hiring next year might not even be on your radar yet. Stay flexible and be ready to pivot toward opportunities in unexpected places. Companies that might not seem to be cool or interesting might be amazing for you.Know the Tools
If you want to keep your seat, learn the AI tools that support your work. Be the human behind the AI—the person who understands both the technology and the human judgment that keeps it on track.Create Your Own Path
A traditional corporate ladder may not be your best—or only—option. A coach can help you identify your strengths and passions, then find ways to turn them into income. The careers of tomorrow will look different from your parents’—start thinking differently now.
Final Thought
The Business Insider article captures a moment in flux. AI is here, but so are you—and your adaptability, skills, and vision will do more to determine your future than any headline.
